ARTS

BACK TO DASHBOARD

Each year, West Gore School offers a range of arts and cultural opportunities for our tamariki.

Kapa haka & POLYFEST
Every Friday, our whole school learns Kapa Haka together with Whaea Jaki. We have a range of waiata that we have learnt, know the significance of and where they might be sung.

Each year our whole school participates in the Polyfest in Invercargill on the stage at the ILT stadium. Our tutor Whaea Jaki prepares us with beautiful waitata, and we perform our school haka, which was written with students. Our leaders of all ages wear our beautiful uniforms with pride.

matariki celebration
Each year around the time of Matariki, our school gathers to celebrate. Each class learns about a different star each year and prepares an item to teach the rest of the school and our parents. The event takes place in our hall, which is decorated with lights and lamps for the occasion, and we share kai. It's as special time for learning more about Matariki together.
Culture fest
Culture Fest is a bi-annual event for which whanau from a range of ethnic backgrounds are invited to join us in making kai to share. Each whanau brought a food that is special to them that showcases their culture. The event also features other cultural celebrations such as Indian dancing, Kapa Hara, and Highland dance.

Our first Culture Fest, held in 2024, had a massive turnout and the hall was packed for the items with a huge variety of traditional foods for people to try. Our celebration shapes identities and celebrates the diversity of our school community.

choir & 'freeze ya bits off'
Our school choir rehearses in the lead up to the local busking competition and end-of-year Graduation and Prizegiving and then performs at both events.

Freeze Ya Bits Off is a four day busking competition that people from all over Aotearoa New Zealand enter. It is held on Kings Birthday weekend every year and is part of the Tussock Country music festival. Local schools compete on the streets of Gore to share their singing talents.
Year 6 Rumble
Once a year, stalls are set up in our grounds by the Year 6 children who sell products, food, hand-made items, and creative wares. Each child pays for a table and money goes to a chosen charity. Children of all levels and whanau love this event with its incredible food selection.
mihi & welcome assembly
We start each term with a Mihi, where we welcome any new students, their whanau and staff to our school. It’s a lovely way for children and whanau to establish their place at our school and a nice opportunity for whanau to connect with each other including through shared kai in the staffroom after the assembly.
local artists
Each year, students work alongside local artists. Janet de Wagt works alongside students on art projects around the school (previous projects have included the play containers and the mural at the front of the school) and selected students participate in printmaking workshops with Jacqui Byars.
